In mid-November, ETH Zurich external page joined the Energy Saving Alliance launched by Federal Councillors Simonetta Sommaruga and Guy Parmelin. By voluntarily adopting energy-saving measures, the members of the Alliance help to ensure that energy is used more sparingly, that energy supply is secured for as long as possible, and that there is no need for shutdowns or new regulations.
As of mid-November, the Alliance comprises 292 members, of which 68 are cantons and communes, 86 are associations and societies, and 138 are Swiss companies. ETH Zurich and the Bern University of Applied Sciences are leading the way in the higher education sector. ETH applied for membership in conjunction with its in-house Energy Shortage Taskforce and the Science-Policy Interface, ETH’s central contact point for scientific policy advice.
Addressing societal challenges
“The Alliance is a forum that offers mutual support for saving energy. Signing up allows ETH to publicise the measures that it is taking internally. Thanks to the Alliance, it can also advocate for knowledge transfer from ETH to the energy sector, especially when it comes to addressing societal challenges,” says Benedikt Knüsel, who leads the Science-Policy Interface in the Office of Knowledge Transfer and Corporate Relations.
The Energy Saving Alliance now lists the “Energy Now!” initiative launched in October 2022 by the Energy Science Center and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy as one of the measures taken by ETH Zurich. As part of this initiative, students and researchers at ETH Zurich are developing creative and innovative solutions for enhanced energy security in the greater Zurich area. The initiative is off to a good start and the second workshop is scheduled to be held on 24 November. In total, ETH Zurich has implemented more than 350 individual energy-saving measures since October.
