Greater storage volume and enhanced security ¨C but restraint when sending and receiving private messages: what switching email services to Exchange Online means for our day-to-day work.

At the end of 2023, the Executive Board decided to incorporate and further develop the role of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) within IT Services in a new section. The position has therefore been filled anew. The new CISO Johannes Hadodo has been heading the section since 1 April 2024.

In this day and age, protection against cyberattacks is absolutely essential. This is a challenge for all of us. The current version of the IT Guidelines and IT Baseline Protection Rules outlines which security measures we need to implement at all costs.

A large part of the emails that ETH members send or receive are copied to a mail archive and stored there. There will now be some changes to this. For example, emails that have been in the mail archive (https://mailarchive.ethz.ch) for more than ten years will now be automatically deleted. Since summer 2020, all members of the ETH community have had the option of using Microsoft Teams. polybox, with its own free cloud storage, has been available to ETH members since more than a year ago. Recently, storage space has been considerably expanded from the initial 5 gigabytes to 50 gigabytes.

Because of the vulnerability called ?Heartbleed? the IT Services of ETH Zurich recommend to change passwords from April 16, 2014. All systems have been updated and are secure.

IDES (software licences for employees) and Stud-IDES (software for students) is the IT Services electronic online purchase and delivery system. It allows the electronic delivery of software, the purchase of soft- and hardware products, media and documentation. Most software programmes are free.
