Honorary doctorate for Irena Hajnsek
Irena Hajnsek, Professor of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing at the ETH-Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oslo. The award was presented to her on Monday at the university’s annual ceremony. Congratulations!
Irena Hajnsek is one of the world's leading scientists in the field of remote sensing with radar waves and the application of satellite radar data. Her outstanding contributions include the development of algorithms using innovative radar techniques for estimating environmental parameters and setting requirements for the design of future radar missions in application areas such as permafrost, glaciers, disaster management, agriculture and climate change impacts.
Hajnsek has been Professor of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing at ETH Zurich since 2009. She also heads the Polarimetric Radar Interferometry research group at the German Aerospace Center and is the science coordinator for the German satellite mission TanDEM-X.
Professor Hajnsek received her diploma in 1996 from the Free University of Berlin, Germany, and her doctorate in 2001 from the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany. She then worked in France, Scotland, Australia and Germany before joining ETH Zurich.
Honorary doctorates from the University of Oslo (Doctor Honoris Causa) are awarded to prominent academics. The appointments usually occur every three years.
